What are You Wearing?

What are You Wearing?

Have you ever wondered about what you’re wearing? If I told you some of your clothes are made out of recycled plastic bottles, would you believe me? Well, it’s true. The process is time consuming and sometimes dangerous.

Firstly the bottles are delivered the bottle recycle center where the first step begins. The bottles are shredded, this releases any leftover liquid. The shredded bottles are wrapped up and put in containers ready to be shipped around the world.

The recycled bottles are shipped to China where they are valuable to the clothing industry. The workers sort the plastic into colours, the clear plastic will be made into white material that can be dyed. The plastic goes through a machine where the bottle caps are made into a plastic that floats so the workers can catch them easily. The stickers are put into a 'bath' of corrosive caustic soda. The workers have to be careful because it’s not good for their skin, but, very good for taking off stickers.

Now what's left is a pile of shredded clear plastic but, it's rather wet after its 'bath'. The plastic it put into an oven where it's mixed with some light coloured plastic. To produce cloth you need some light coloured material in the mix. The plastic stays in the oven for ten hours, slowly drying out. When the plastic shreds are ready the workers move their cart underneath the drum and the plastic falls out. The workers have to be careful of their heads as other drums spin.

It's hard to make any material with just little shreds so another step is needed. The mixture is sent through a rotating screw which heats up to about 270 degrees celsius. This melts the plastic and forces it through a sieve, which makes the melted plastic strings, the strings are emptied into a container below. We now have thread but it isn't strong enough to make cloth yet. The weak thread is combined and stretched several times while being heated, this bonds the fibers together. It's taken a while to make the fabric but... the next part of the process it to tear it apart again. The fluff that is made it the raw substance you need to make polyester, however, that takes place in another factory altogether. So, it's balled up and sent on it's way.

Polyester looks like cotton wool but it's an entirely man-made substance, created by your old bottles. The next machine scraps in into a very rough cloth which is loaded and ready to be carded, carding is where bonded fibers are brushed together so they all lie in a similar direction. This strengthens the material so therefor the polyester is ready to be made into thread.

Finally, the next machines tease it and spin off mile after mile of newly made thread.
The material is collected on large bobbins. Lastly, the machine weaves all the threads into a new sheet of polyester. It then goes through two more machines to make it smooth, it's then given to the clothes makers to make our clothes.

Remember those plastic bottles you recycled a couple months ago? Well, you may be wearing them right now! In conclusion, I think making clothes out of recycled bottles is a good thing, taking something with no use and turning it into something people use everyday.

Descriptive Writing

He started off as an innocent carnival clown. Someone who you trusted with your children. Until one day… Simon the creepy carnival clown was up on a high platform in front of all the people attending the carnival. He had a small eight-year-old boy with him, the boy had won a contest to spend the day with the awkward clown. The platform was quite small, they had to stand close together to prevent themselves from falling. The small boy peered down at his proud parents, smiling and waving. The clown saw that the boy was too close to the edge, he reached out and grabbed the boy’s shirt. An overwhelming feeling took over the clown. He felt as powerful as the president and he loved it . He, an awkward carnival clown, could save or end this young boy’s life. He watched in horror as the small boy fell over fifty meters to the hard ground awaiting him.

He could hear the police sirens from back at the carnival but he was long gone. He carjacked the nearest car with an old woman sitting inside.
Simon knew he had to ditch the car soon but he kept driving, wanting to get as far away as possible. When he came to the nearest red light, he stopped the car and got out calmly. Simon walked into the nearest dank alleyway. He wasn’t surprised when he saw a couple of dead mice littering the walk way. He didn’t stop walking until the darkness had consumed him. When he was sure no one could see him he sat down not sure what to do next. He was crestfallen, he hadn’t meant to let go of the boy. He was just another failure sitting in a damp alleyway. He felt as cold as a winter's day even though it’s the middle of summer.

The carnival clown heard a noise, someone or something was trying to get his attention. He looked around but all he could see was a slimy frog, staring at him intently. The clown almost jumped out of his costume when the frog said “The cops are almost here…run.” The clown scrambled, trying to climb the wall like a cat climbing up curtains. He then heard the sirens. ‘This has got to be the end of me’ the saddened clown thought as he fell once again to the ground. Soon the flashlights of a police squad blinded him. He was forced onto his stomach and handcuffed. It took three police officers to drag the distraught clown to their awaiting van. The now convicted carnival clown, was sentenced to a life time in jail for murder. Although to this day, he still thinks about the talking frog he saw in the dank, dark alleyway.

Week 4 Reading

This week in reading we read a story from the school journal...
Hurry up, Tim

Tim didn’t like cross country, he tried to get out of it each year.
This year Tim asked to go to the toilet but the teacher knew what he was up to so he came back in time for the run.
Instead of running the full distance, he cheated to come in the top 3.

Week 4 Writing

Over the last couple of weeks we have been trying to persuade our teacher to allow us to listen to music or or we think that music should not be allowed.

Does music help people learn, or distract them?
Does it depend on the music, or on the person?

I believe that music is a distraction and does not belong in the classroom.
If music were allowed in the classroom, think of all the distractions. All the students with their own music, tapping and banging. If you wanted to get their attention, how would you do it?

People will listen to the music they like, therefore they will focus on the song and not on the work in front of them. Most people like their music loud, even with headphones you can still hear the annoying buzz of the song, this little buzz will distract the other students around them causing a lot of unfinished work.

I think it depends on both, the music and the person. If the person is easily distracted then the will not get as much work as expected. If the music is someone’s favourite song then as I said earlier, they are most likely to concentrate on the song. The music we listen to today is probably deemed inappropriate for school being the song title or the language involved which make the whole idea of listening to music completely pointless.

If less work is completed due to music this will infuriate the teacher, they may even make the students stay in, resulting in wasting our short lunch times and setting a bad tone for the rest of the day.

Therefore, I strongly believe listening to music is a waste of time and will not benefit the students learning. We should keep the school environment for learning and home environment for music and other things.

Week 3 Maths

Reading

This week in reading I did this based on the story "Past or Present" from a school journal

Describe something nasty or nice that a character did and explain why they did it

Api doesn't want anything to do with the new kid, Matthew. He doesn't want him to be on his soccer team, he doesn't want to hear his jokes, he doesn’t want his gifts!
He did this because he didn’t want to draw attention to himself. He didn’t want Jason, the main bully, to bully him as well. Matthew just wanted someone to hang out with.

Week Two Reading

Synthesis // Five Points
Describe what you think the climax of the story is. Why do you think this is the climax?

The climax of the story is when Miss Honey adopts Matilda. This for me is the climax because it makes the reader really happy to see Matilda go to a loving family.
